San Mateo police urge caution ahead of expected protests on Peninsula
SAN MATEO — Police urged people to exercise caution during an expected day of walkouts and protests in which students from several schools in San Mateo are expected to participate.
The San Mateo Police Department issued the advisory ahead of the anticipated protests locally and nationwide on Jan. 30.
“Officers will be monitoring the designated routes students will be following to ensure the safety of all pedestrians and drivers alike,” San Mateo police stated in an advisory the law enforcement agency issued Thursday.
Large groups of students are expected to travel from schools in San Mateo, the police department stated.
Police anticipate that the students will travel southbound from Burlingame to San Mateo’s Central Park, which is near the corner of El Camino Real and East 5th Avenue.
Police believe traveling times will begin around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, so people can arrive at the park around 1 p.m. Police expect that the activities will be completed around 4 p.m.
During the march, traffic might be affected on or near Alameda de las Pulgas, South El Camino Real, Aragon Boulevard, 5th Avenue, and North Delaware Street.
“The number of participants is currently unknown, but a large number is anticipated,” the police department stated. Police urged participants to remain on the sidewalks.
