Venezuela’s Interim President Announces General Amnesty for Political Prisoners

Venezuela’s interim president announced a sweeping general amnesty for political prisoners, aiming to ease decades of political violence and polarization.

Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s interim president, announced a general amnesty for political prisoners, according to reports published on Saturday.

She made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the 2026 judicial year at Venezuela’s Supreme Court, outlining plans to advance a broad amnesty law.

Rodríguez said the proposed law would cover all periods of political violence in Venezuela dating back to 1999, a year marking the start of major political transformation in the country.

Venezuela has endured years of deep political division, with repeated waves of unrest, mass arrests, and accusations of judicial politicization.

Rodríguez instructed the Judicial Reform Commission and the Democratic Coexistence and Peace Program to submit the amnesty bill to the National Assembly as soon as possible.

She urged lawmakers to fully cooperate, saying the law should help heal wounds caused by political confrontation, violence, and extremism, and restore justice nationwide.

The move comes amid longstanding criticism of Venezuela’s leadership, including allegations that former president Nicolás Maduro oversaw crackdowns on political opponents.
