Nintendo's Virtual Boy Switch Accessory Is Somehow Sold Out In 2026

Nintendo is one of the juggernauts of the video game industry. The company, with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, dominated a lot of sales charts and casual conversations in 2025. It also turns out that a Switch 2 accessory, designed to emulate one of Nintendo's darkest eras, is also selling well.

According to Nintendo's website, the Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 is currently sold out. "Experience Virtual Boy with this add-on accessory that is a replica of the original hardware. Simply insert your Nintendo Switch™ 2 or Nintendo Switch™ system (each sold separately) into the accessory and get ready to play classic Virtual Boy titles like Teleroboxer, and Galactic Pinball! Additional titles will be added in the future," reads the product description.

Additionally, Nintendo has stated on the website that potential customers should check back on February 16, 2026, to purchase, while supplies last. The retail purchase price will be $99.99.

The Virtual Boy was released in 1995 and became one of the most notorious video game consoles in history. The console was panned by critics and fans alike and was a commercial failure, leading to the console ceasing production globally in 1996, making it one of the shortest-lived video game console launches in history.

Players often criticize the console for its heavy use of red-and-black display, which can be harsh on the eyes, an uncomfortable playing position, and a lack of software support. Nintendo would go on to turn around its failure with the Nintendo 64 in 1996.

The new accessory is designed to emulate the authentic Virtual Boy experience, for better or worse. With these seemingly high sales, though, it seems Nintendo fans are clamoring to have another part of Nintendo's extensive history as part of their collections.

Nintendo has not yet released official sales numbers for the accessory.

The Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 accessory is scheduled to release on February 17, 2026.
