CHP believes that fog was the cause, with a visibility of just 100 to 200 feet reported when the crash happened.

The accident caused the temporary closure of the busy highway in both directions until around 2:30pm.

“CHP is on scene of a 59-vehicle collision on State Route 99 near Avenue 24, impacting both northbound and southbound lanes, which are currently blocked. Multiple parties sustained minor to moderate injuries. Detours are in place—please plan alternate routes and expect significant delays,” the patrol reported on Facebook.

ABC News reports that 10 people were taken to a local hospital for injuries. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported.
