San Rafael church vandalism case advances toward trial
Prosecutors have enough evidence to justify a trial against a man accused of vandalizing Saint Raphael Church in downtown San Rafael, a judge ruled.
Jonathan Cunningham Tillson, 32, of San Rafael allegedly damaged a crucifix figurine and lighting equipment in the chapel on April 11. On Monday, Judge Kelly Simmons advanced the case to trial after concluding an evidentiary hearing.
The hearing included testimony from the church maintenance supervisor who saw the damage and a San Rafael police officer who said he recognized Tillson in a church security camera video.
Simmons denied a defense request to reduce the charge of vandalizing a place of worship to a misdemeanor. Prosecutor Daniel Madow cited Tillson’s arrest history involving assault, intoxication and vandalism allegations.
Simmons set the next hearing for Feb. 27. Tillson’s public defender, Thomas Master, declined to comment.
Tillson is not in custody.
