Mutant Aussie Slab Wave Goes Berserk: ‘Biggest in a Decade’ (Video)
Almost a year ago, surfers in Sydney, Australia were gifted an Easter Weekend treat when Cape Solander lit up with what many were calling the biggest swell in a decade.
That is, surfers with a death wish.
Cape Solander (aka Cape Fear) went massive, psycho, practically un-surfable…although many gave it a go. And now, in a newly published video from the folks at We Bodyboard, courtesy of master drone operator Shaun Peterson, here’s a lookback at the swell.
The caption explains:
“THE BIGGEST, MEANEST CAPE SOLANDER YOU WILL LIKELY SEE!! When this dropped into the WB inbox I was left in disbelief, we have all seen bits of this session from Tim and the individual riders, but to see the whole day from start to finish is something else! Legendary drone pilot Shaun Petersen has been quietly sitting on this footage for almost a year.. and BOY was it worth the wait. Watch as the Aus' biggest chargers tackle one of the worlds heaviest waves on a MAXING day! Only the bravest (or maddest) need apply!”
Currently, the surfing situation around Sydney has been infiltrated by shark fever, following a rash of attacks – including 12-year-old Nico Antic who sadly lost his life, and 27-year-old surfer Andre de Ruyter who lost a leg, but is expected to recover.
So, this is a nice change of pace to see…although terrifying in a different way.
The waves during this swell were almost un-surfable as many noted. And it showed a face of Cape Solander not seen since the infamous, benchmark Red Bull Cape Fear event from 2016. As such, many in the comments remarked on the monstrosity:
“How is this real? This is a freaking death slab. I wish I could give this a thousand likes. Insane footage.”
