Meta and Western Digital trim 100 South Bay jobs in additional layoffs

Meta Platforms and Western Digital Technologies have both trimmed Bay Area jobs that will affect more than 100 workers in the region, marking a fresh round of layoffs for the still-shaky tech industry.

Social media titan Meta, which owns the Facebook app, disclosed its plans to cut 102 jobs in two South Bay cities, according to a post on the state Employment Development Department website.

Separately, Western Digital Technologies has cut 47 jobs at the data storage company’s headquarters on Great Oaks Parkway in South San Jose, a post on the EDD site shows. Those staffing reductions took place on Jan. 27.

Meta stated that it has decided to cut 52 jobs in Sunnyvale and another 50 positions at or near the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park. Those layoffs are slated to take effect on March 20, the EDD reported.

Previously, Meta Platforms told the state labor agency that it would eliminate 219 jobs in Burlingame on March 20.

Western Digital had previously reported to the EDD that it had cut 87 positions on Jan. 20 at the headquarters site.

Due primarily to a surge in technology hiring in the South Bay, the Bay Area added 200 tech jobs in December, according to seasonally adjusted industry numbers that Beacon Economics derived from the EDD monthly report.

The South Bay added 1,800 tech jobs last month, while the San Francisco-San Mateo region lost a net total of 900, and the East Bay lost 600 tech positions, the Beacon assessment determined. The North Bay’s metro areas lost a combined 100 tech jobs.
