Another 49ers Player Shot: Keion White Undergoes Surgery After Super Bowl Night

From the outside looking in, it often seems like football players who are great enough to make it to the NFL will have it made. In reality, however, life can be chaotic and star athletes are people just like the rest of us. Still, it is shocking that another San Francisco 49ers player has been shot in the city the team calls home, requiring surgery as a result.

The New York Times' Athletic Division has reported that the San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion Whitewas shot on Mission Street in San Francisco. At 4:06 a.m. on February 9, 2026, only hours after the Super Bowl ended in the city, White was on the 17th block of Mission Street when the shooting happened. According to San Francisco Police spokesperson Evan Sernoffsky, White was the only victim, and no arrests have been made.

Sernoffsky went on to explain that there was an altercation going on between two groups when White was shot, even though the NFL player wasn't believed to be involved in that situation. He was taken to a nearby hospital and underwent ankle surgery that afternoon.

The 49ers released a statement on what happened to White. “Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco. He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Thankfully for White, his loved ones, 49ers fans, and the team, The Athletic reported that he is expected to make a full recovery.

49ers Player Ricky Pearsall Was Also Previously Shot in San Francisco

As CNN reported at the time, Ricky Pearsallwas shot on August 31, 2024, in San Francisco. Unfortunately for the wide receiver, who is Keion White's current teammate, Pearsall was shot in the chest during a failed robbery of his Rolex watch. Despite that, Pearsall was released from the hospital the following day after he also underwent surgery.

Given that another 49ers player was shot in the city less than two years after the 2024 incident, it certainly seems like a troubling pattern that hopefully will end here.
