Police Officer Killed After Amusement Ride Collapses
A horrific scene unfolded at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Fair in Faridabad, India, where a so-called swinging "tsunami" ride collapsed and killed at least one person.
According to The Times of India, the swing collapsed at around 6:30 p.m. local time. The outlet reports that at least 26 people were riding the swing when it became unhinged. The ride hung mid-air as passengers were strapped to their seats.
Bystanders rushed to the scene to offer help, including Inspector Jagdish Prasa. But after a few minutes, tragedy struck when the ride collapsed, crushing Prasa underneath while sending others scurrying for safety.
The local police department praised Prasa for his heroism.
"While on duty, Inspector Jagdish made the supreme sacrifice while saving citizens," the police station posted on X. "His courage and dedication to duty will always remain a source of inspiration."
At least a dozen people were injured due to the deadly malfunction. It's unclear what led to the collapse, but officials are investigating if it was a mechanical or electrical failure.
Local authorities warned of strong winds earlier in the day after a gate near the food court collapsed, injuring one person. It's not immediately clear if the wind played a role in the tragedy.
The tragedy comes a month after another amusement ride dubbed the "Dragon Swing" collapsed and injured 14 schoolchildren.
The Surajkund International Crafts Fair, which showcases regional and international crafts and traditions, will continue as planned until it concludes on Sunday.
