Keep crop-based fuels out of the UK SAF Mandate, says AEF

AEF has signed a letter, alongside other aviation campaign groups, calling for crop-based fuels to remain excluded from the UK’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate. Allowing these fuels in would undermine the mandate’s sustainability goals.

The Government’s call for evidence on the possibility of including crop-based fuels comes only one year after the UK SAF Mandate came into effect. The exclusion of crop-based fuels to date recognises serious concerns that they can put pressure on land use, contribute to deforestation, and decrease biodiversity.

Instead the UK SAF mandate focuses on waste as a feedstock, and the prioritisation of the development of alternative fuels with the greatest long-term potential, particularly e-fuels. We believe this remains the right choice for UK SAF policy.

AEF plans to submit its own evidence to the Government in addition to this letter, and will also flag serious sustainability concerns of crop-based fuels in a separate consultation on biomass, which is due to close on the 27th of February 2026.
