Skip Certain Sweet Treats if Your Valentine Has This Allergy

The FDA has recalled cake mixes that contained an undeclared milk allergen that could pose a life-threatening risk to people with allergies.

For Valentine’s Day, you might be thinking about baking a cake or bread for your sweetheart, but a nationwide alert is accelerating the heat on food safety. The FDA recalled almost 900 bags of cake and bread mixes to a Class I designation, its most urgent and serious warning level.

The FDA alert covers three specific types of mixes distributed in large, 50-pound bags. These mixes are from Dallas-based distribution company B.C. Williams Bakery Service. While these are often used by commercial bakeries or large-scale food services, the agency is urging everyone in the supply chain to double-check their inventory.

What Mixes Are Recalled?

The recalled items include:

  • Spice Cake Mix — Batch 221 (51 bags)
  • Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix — Lot #072925-220 and Lot #071825-36 (95 bags)
  • Bread and Roll Mix — Multiple Lot numbers including #072225-217 through #101725-209 (720 bags)

What Should I Do?

If you or someone you bake for has a milk sensitivity or allergy, do not use these ingredients. Donate to people who don’t have these allergies because they are safe for other people..
