The United States released new intelligence details alleging China conducted a covert nuclear test, intensifying scrutiny amid growing global security tensions today.

A senior US official said seismic data indicates China may have conducted an underground nuclear explosion at its western testing region.

Christopher Yau, a senior State Department official, said monitoring stations recorded a 2.75 magnitude event consistent with an underground explosive test.

He added the signal did not match mining explosions or natural earthquakes and showed characteristics typical of a nuclear detonation.

However, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization said available data is insufficient to confirm a nuclear test, and the exact cause remains unclear.

China rejected the allegation, saying it remains committed to nuclear test-ban obligations and insisting it has not conducted prohibited nuclear activities.

China’s last officially acknowledged underground nuclear test occurred in 1996, before it signed international agreements restricting further nuclear testing activities.

The claims emerge as global nuclear tensions grow following the expiry of the last major US-Russia arms control agreement, raising fears of renewed strategic competition.
