Sports Briefs: Branson boys set to defend NCS hoops title
The Branson boys are heading back to the North Coast Section finals. The top-seeded Bulls dominated No. 5 seed Brave Christian, 70-52, at College of Marin in Tuesday’s NCS Division III semifinal.
Branson, the defending champion, will host No. 2 Cornerstone Christian in the title game. The full game story from Tuesday’s action is available online at www.marinij.com and will appear in print in Thursday’s Marin IJ.
Boys golf
Marin Catholic’s Finn Henne shot a low round 36 at the Meadow Club to lead the Wildcats to a 190-199 victory over Redwood on Tuesday. The Giants’ Jack Caldwell and Wildcats’ Lincoln Sylvester tied at 37, while Marin Catholic’s Jasper Smith fired a 38.
- Jack Caldwell and James Hamill both shot an even 72 at The Course at Wente Vineyards in Alameda. as Redwood High took fifth place in the 24-team annual Bay Area Cowboy Tournament. All five Giants players recorded scores in the 70s.
Men’s golf
Dominican University’s Jonathan Chen finished tied for second at the Visit Stockton Invitational, shooting 4-under 72 at The Reserve at Spanos Park on Tuesday. Senior Daniel Marmorstein placed seventh after shooting a 2-under 74 the first day and 71 the final day.
Women’s golf
Dominican University sophomore Madi Whitney followed up an opening-round 7 with a career-best 68 Tuesday at Corica Park Golf Course in Alameda as she placed 10th in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.
Boys soccer
No. 4 seeded Redwood (8-7-4) saw its season come to an end following a penalty shootout loss at home to No. 9 Pittsburg (9-7-8) in the North Coast Section Division III semifinals on Tuesday. The game finished in a 1-1 tie.
Prep baseball
Petaluma High beat Redwood, 4-1, in a game shortened to five innings by the rain. The Giants (0-1) are scheduled to play Acalanes on Friday in the East Bay.
Boys tennis
Redwood High squeezed in a 7-0 home victory over San Marin before the rains came Monday. The Giants’ No. 1-3 singles, Calado Faral, Lukas Berger and Hudson Brod, all won 6-0, 6-0. Redwood won two doubles matches, 6-0, 6-0, while two matches were defaulted.
- The Branson School swept host Novato, 7-0, on Monday as the Bulls’ Finn Higgins beat the Hornets’ Indie Stanic, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Branson’s Mason Ogborne, Ryder Teakle and Chase Hee also won singles matches.
- Tam High took a 5-2 win against Marin Catholic at Bay Club Ross Valley on Monday, but the teams were evenly matched on the court. Marin Catholic defaulted three matches and the teams split the four contested matches. The Red-tailed Hawks Ben McGinnes earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Marin Catholic’s Charlie Miller and Burke Hadd scored wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Tam’s Ethan Camposano and Lorcan Keane won 6-1, 6-1 at No.1 doubles.
- Fin Donnelly, Julian Scheidelman and Stuart Pratt won at No. 2-4 singles to lead Archie Williams High to a 6-0 victory over host San Rafael High. the No. 1 singles match was washed out by the rain.
College athletics
College of Marin, celebrating its centennial year, is relaunching the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame this year.
“As we mark 100 years of College of Marin, relaunching our Athletics Hall of Fame is a meaningful way to honor the people who built our athletic legacy,” COM’s Ryan Byrne said in a press release. “We invite alumni, former coaches, staff, and community members to submit nominations and help us recognize those who deserve to be celebrated during this historic milestone.”
Nominees may include former student-athletes, coaches, teams, administrators, and contributors who have demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement, leadership, sportsmanship, and service to College of Marin. A special category is also available to honor impactful faculty and staff members whose work significantly advanced the Athletics Department.
COM is now accepting nominations for future Hall of Fame classes. Nomination forms can be found on the online at https://athletics.marin.edu/. The deadline for nominations is March 27.
