'A Minecraft Movie' Was Just Dethroned as 2025's Biggest Hit

The biggest blockbusters of last year were all jockeying to be at the top of the 2025 box office charts, and now there's a new movie in the No. 1 spot—and it's not the one that has a chicken jockey in it. Zootopia 2 has overtaken A Minecraft Movie as the highest grossing domestic release of 2025.

Zootopia 2, the sequel to Disney's hit animated movie about a sly fox and eager bunny who must work together to crack a criminal conspiracy in an animal city, hit theaters on November 26, 2025. It is still in some theaters 13 weekends later, which is why, on February 25, 2026, it was able to snatch the stop spot from A Minecraft Movie. That film, an adaptation of the wildly popular video game series, came out in April 2025. It made $424.08 million at the domestic box office. Zootopia 2's total is currently $424.2 million, per Variety.

That it took this long for Zootopia2 to overtake A Minecraft Movie is somewhat surprising. The Disney film is absurdly successful overseas. With a total box office of $1.85 billion, it's the ninth-highest grossing movie of all time, the second-highest-grossing animated movie of all time, and it's critically acclaimed to boot. A Minecraft Movie is no slouch; the Jack Black-led film is one of the most successful video game movies of all time. (Only The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which also stars Black, is ahead of it.) But with a total box office of $961.2 million, it's clear that A Minecraft Movie did not enjoy the same level of wild success overseas as Zootopia2 did. Zootopia 2 was a massive hit in China, and American movies succeed far less frequently in that country these days than they did a decade ago. Zootopia 2 is one of the rare American films to still be a smash in China, and the worldwide box office reflects that.

Zootopia 2 Is Not the Highest-Grossing Movie Worldwide of 2025, Though. Another Animated Film Is.

By surpassing A Minecraft Movie, Zootopia 2 now sits at the top of the American box office charts. It is not the No. 1 movie of the year worldwide, however. That honor goes to another animated movie,Ne Zha II. A Chinese fantasy adventure film based on Chinese mythology, Ne Zha 2 made an eye-popping $2.16 billion worldwide. That makes it the highest-grossing animated film ever, highest-grossing non-English language film, and the second-highest-grossing movie of any sort in history (not adjusted for inflation).

Notably, while Zootopia 2 rode a wave of success in America and in China, the United States is pretty irrelevant to Ne Zha 2's box office triumph. Despite a release in the States by A24, Ne Zha 2 made just $23.3 million in America. So, while Zootopia 2 almost certainly won't be able to beat Ne Zha 2 in the worldwide box office competition, it solidly won the battle in America, for whatever that's worth.
