UN Chief Voices Concern Over Escalating Tensions Between Kabul and Islamabad

UN Secretary-General warns escalating Taliban–Pakistan clashes risk regional instability, urging both sides to pursue dialogue and protect civilians.

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, expressed deep concern over escalating clashes between Taliban forces and Pakistan, calling on both sides to avoid further military confrontation.

In a statement, Guterres urged the parties to resolve their disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that they must uphold international obligations, particularly regarding the protection of civilians.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has claimed that Taliban forces killed 40 Pakistani soldiers and seized several border posts during recent fighting, describing the clashes as a defensive response to cross-border aggression.

Mujahid also alleged that Pakistani airstrikes targeted multiple Afghan provinces but said no civilian casualties were reported from those attacks.

Pakistani officials, meanwhile, maintain that their military operations were launched in response to hostile actions originating from Afghan territory. They say the strikes targeted militant positions threatening Pakistan’s security.

According to reports broadcast by Geo News, Pakistani forces claim to have inflicted significant casualties on Taliban fighters during ongoing operations.

Guterres noted that mediation efforts by regional actors, including Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, should continue in order to prevent further escalation and restore stability.
