Dusty Bathroom Fan Cover? Keep It Clean With This Hack

If you’re tired of having to climb onto a step stool to awkwardly vacuum all the dust out of your fuzzy HVAC returns and bathroom vents, then you’ll love this viral internet hack that uses wax paper to prevent dust from building up on these vents. Bathroom vents and HVAC returns suck in a lot of dust. It doesn’t take long for that dust to collect on the vent covers, turning them into fuzzy grey eye sores. This simple trick using only wax paper makes them dust resistant for months.

To clean these vents you either need to remove them or climb up onto a step ladder with a vacuum attachment. This TikTok hack from Home DIY influencer Ken Long keeps dust from collecting on those vents using just wax paper. 

• Step1: Remove the vent cover and clean it with a vacuum brush or a damp cloth to remove the fuzz. If the first is really caked on, take it outside and give it a good rinse with a hose. Wait for it to dry before moving to the next step.
• Step 2: Crumple up a ball of wax paper and rub it over the slats on the vent cover. Be thorough. The goal is to get as much wax on the cover as possible.
• Step 3: The cover should have a slight sheen to it and smoother feel when you're done.
• Step 4: Reinstall the cover. 

Why it Works

By rubbing the vent cover with the wax paper you’re accomplishing two things that will help keep it clean:

1. Wax Transfer: By rubbing the vent with the wax paper, you’re transferring a thin layer of paraffin wax onto the slats. This makes the surface more slippery, so dust slides off of it instead of clinging to it.
2. Static Reset: When you rub the cover with the wax paper, you’re also neutralizing the static electricity that builds up when the air is flowing over the housing, so dust won't cling to it.

How Long Does it Work?

This hack has a surprising amount of staying power. You can get up to 4 months or more of dust resistance until the wax layer wears off and you need to repeat the treatment.
