Media Support Body Warns of Growing Risks to Afghan Journalists in Iran and Pakistan
The Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) has expressed serious concern over the situation of Afghan journalists currently residing in Iran and Pakistan.
In a statement issued Monday, the organization said that US–Israeli attacks on Iran, along with rising tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan, have placed Afghan journalists in increasingly difficult and uncertain conditions.
AMSO reported that over the past two days, two Afghan journalists were arrested in Pakistan and are reportedly facing forced deportation back to Afghanistan.
The statement emphasized that returning individuals who face serious security threats constitutes a clear violation of international human rights law and refugee protection principles.
The organization urged Pakistan to immediately halt the forced deportation of Afghan journalists and respect its international obligations.
AMSO also called on human rights organizations and the United Nations to take practical steps toward the resettlement of at-risk Afghan journalists in third countries.
Dozens of Afghan journalists fled the country after the Taliban’s return to power and are now living in neighboring states under uncertain legal and security conditions.
Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, media freedom in the country has sharply declined, with many journalists reporting threats, censorship, detention, and intimidation.
Neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Iran have hosted a significant number of exiled Afghan journalists, but shifting political tensions and immigration crackdowns have heightened fears of arrest and deportation.
AMSO warns that Afghan journalists in Iran and Pakistan face growing risks, citing recent arrests and potential forced deportations amid escalating regional tensions.
