Winter Storm Warning Issued With Travel 'Nearly Impossible'

After a series of winter storms throughout the past several weeks, most of the United States is expecting some warmer temperatures in the coming days and weeks as spring finally approaches. However, one part of the country is facing some rather significant winter weather over the next several days.

On Monday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a series of winter storm warnings for the South Atlantic and Appalachian regions of the United States, especially in Virginia and West Virginia, warning of likely power outages and travel that could be "nearly impossible."

Winter Storm Warnings

On Monday morning, the NWS offices in Blacksburg, Virginia, and Charleston, West Virginia issued winter storm warnings for what it described as "heavy mixed precipitation," including additional snow and heavy ice.

The warnings cover Harman and Snowshoe in West Virginia, as well as Quinwood, Duo, and Rainelle in Virginia, but the storm is expected to impact other areas in the region, as well, so those in the region are advised to use caution.

"A few power outages and tree limb damage are possible. Plan on slippery road conditions, especially in the higher terrain. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening
and Tuesday morning commutes," the NWS warned in its winter storm warning.

The advisories will remain in effect until 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Travel Expected to be 'Nearly Impossible'

The NWS warned that the winter storm could cause severe issues for travelers, especially in West Virginia, warning that in some areas, travel could be "nearly impossible" as a result of the heavy ice.

"Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes," the NWS warned.

If you do have to travel, it's important to make sure that your car is packed with all the essentials for winter travel.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1 or by accessing the online traffic and roadway portal for your state," the NWS warned.

Additionally, you should be prepared for how to properly and safely drive through heavy winter weather. All in all, it's important to be prepared for whatever the winter weather might throw at you, especially if you're on the road.
