Winter Storm Warnings Announced for 5 States as 14 Inches of Snow, 40 mph Winds Emerge
Several states across the United States are bracing for significant snowfall as the National Weather Service tracks multiple fronts that will cause dangerous travel conditions.
Just over a week after battling a record-setting blizzard that dropped over three feet of snow in some spots, the Northeast is once again preparing for snow. What's been one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record over the past two decades will bring a bit more snow accumulation this week before temperatures finally start to warm.
5 States Bracing for up to 14 Inches of Snow, Strong Winds
On Tuesday, March 3 the National Weather Service offered new winter storm warnings for five states: Alaska, Colorado, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island while updating winter storm warnings for several states in the Northeast like New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts as a new winter storm rolls through.
Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire will get the worst of the storm in the Northeast as up to five inches of snow falls in the region. Other states in the Northeast will see up to three inches of snow and ice accumulations that will create dangerous driving conditions.
Parts of Alaska will see up to 10 inches of snowfall, but the National Weather Service warned of even higher amounts. "Snow is expected to mix with and eventually change over to rain on Tuesday from Sitka over to Kake and Petersburg, however, if the changeover is delayed, snowfall amounts could be higher," it said.
Colorado, meanwhile, is set to see a significant amount of snow and strong winds as cold front moves East from the Northwest. Additional snow accumulations between six and 14 inches with 40 mph winds will hit Rocky Mountain National Park and the Medicine Bow Range, and The Mountains of Summit County, the Mosquito Range, and the Indian Peaks.
"This cold front is currently forecast to approach the Northwest Wednesday morning before cross the Intermountain West Thursday morning and reaching the Rockies by Thursday night," the National Weather Service said. "Heavy snow is possible in most mountain ranges spanning from the Cascades to the central Rockies, along with the potential for low elevation snowfall following the cold frontal passage."
Warmer Temperatures in Store for Most of the U.S.
While the West has experienced a cooldown this week and the Northeast is battling yet another snowstorm, warmer temperatures are expected across much oft he United States.
Widespread highs into the 70's are forecast to span from the central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic with highs into the 80's forecast across the southern Plains today. Much of the Northeast is expected to see warming next week with temperatures reaching the 60's in several states.
