Ali Khamenei To Be Buried in Holy City of Mashhad
Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that the body of Ali Khamenei, former Iran’s leader, killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes, will be buried in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
The agency said on Wednesday, March 4 that officials are planning a funeral ceremony for Khamenei in Tehran. According to the report, the exact timing of the burial and funeral procession has not yet been determined.
Khamenei was killed in the first wave of U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday, along with several members of his family and senior government officials.
The conflict has resulted in heavy casualties across Iran, with rights groups reporting more than 1,000 civilians killed and thousands wounded nationwide.
In addition to Iranian losses, at least 11 people have been killed in Israeli territory by Iranian retaliation, and six U.S. service members have died, with others wounded, as the broader conflict escalates.
Israeli and U.S. officials have said the strikes targeted military and strategic sites, describing the campaign as aimed at degrading Iran’s security leadership.
Tehran has accused Washington and Tel Aviv of launching an unprovoked war, warning of regional consequences and vowing retaliation.
The burial in Mashhad, a city of religious significance, is expected to draw large crowds, as authorities prepare security measures amid continuing hostilities and uncertainty over the conflict’s trajectory.
