French frigate off Cyprus, more EU countries now involved
A French frigate is off the coast of Cyprus, the French general staff said on Thursday.
In a post on X, the general staff said France was committed to supporting Cyprus in coordination with its European allies, after the attack on the island.
“European solidarity and commitment for regional stability,” it added.
On Tuesday, French president Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the frigate Languedoc was due to arrive in Cypriot waters, while also announcing that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle would be deployed to the region.
Reuters reported on Thursday that The Netherlands would also be sending naval assets to protect Cyprus in coming days.
It quoted the Italian defence minister as saying that The Netherlands were joining Italy, Spain and France in the region.
