210 Freeway traffic this week due to emergency construction near 605 Freeway

Attention drivers: Emergency construction on the eastbound 210 Freeway which started Tuesday, March 3, will continue next week.

Maintenance crews are completing urgent slab repair on the 210 Freeway near the 605 Freeway intersection in Irwindale to repair a dip in the roadway, said Katy Macek, a spokeswoman for Caltrans.

“This work is in response to a large volume of customer service requests we received about the dip,” she said.

Daytime work on the carpool, No. 1 and 2 lanes will continue until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5.

Caltrans crews will switch to overnight work next week, March 10, to finish repairs in the No. 3 and No. 4 lanes, Macek said.

On Facebook, drivers warned others about the terrible traffic on the freeway and on nearby side streets. One questioned why the construction was being done in the daytime.

“I myself experienced the overflow on surface streets,” said Azusa City Councilwoman Sabrina Bow. “There was tremendous traffic on Arrow Highway Tuesday night,” she added.

Bow received information from the city public works about the construction and made a posted about it on Facebook.

Due to calls received regarding the construction, the city of Duarte also went on social media and gave construction updates directly from the Caltrans website. In its post, the city recommended residents avoid the high traffic area until construction is completed.

“The city has received a high volume of calls related to concerns about the emergency construction. Residents are concerned that heavy traffic is affecting commute times,” said Andres Rangel, assistant to the city manager and city spokesman.

The city has been facing gridlock traffic during the construction work, specifically east of Highland Avenue during peak hours, Rangel said.

Macek of Caltrans suggested drivers can take the 10 Freeway as an alternate route or use public transportation such as a Metro A Line
