Timothée Chalamet Told Kylie Jenner ‘I Hate This’ During an Awkward Oscars Moment, per Lip Reading Expert

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner had a big date night at the Oscars on March 15, but they didn’t seem to enjoy having their romance on display.

Fans took one look at their interaction during a commercial break that was posted on E! News‘ Instagram page and understood why they were feeling awkward. And now, a lip reader has decoded their conversation.

The dynamic duo was seated in their orchestra area at the Dolby Theatre, where it was clear that photographers and reporters were surrounding them with cameras. Jenner leaned into her boyfriend as they held hands, but Chalamet’s wiggling legs gave a hint at how uncomfortable they were.

The Daily Mail spoke to lip-reading expert Nicola Hickling to try to decipher what the couple was saying during the tense moment.

Hickling believes that Chalamet told Jenner, “I hate this,” while never taking the forced smile off his face.

She reportedly responded, “We’re all right, okay.”

“Yeah,” he said, per Hickling.

“I hope so,” Jenner continued.

“Tonight – I need a big cuddle,” Chalamet replied.

It was a stressful week for Chalament, who was the frontrunner to win the Best Actor Oscar for his role in Marty Supreme for most of the season. Still, a late-season loss to Michael B. Jordan at The Actor Awards on March 1, and his messy controversy about ballet and opera ahead of the ceremony, changed the narrative quickly.

Chalamet has been ambitious in his pursuit of quality roles, and he hasn’t been shy about it. When he won the 2025 SAG Award for Best Actor for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, he said in his acceptance speech:

“I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there, so I’m deeply grateful to that. This doesn’t signify that, but it’s a little more fuel. It’s a little more ammo to keep going.”

That drive might have derailed him in his 2026 quest for the Oscar; it wasn’t Chalamet’s turn — it was Jordan’s. Still, he had Jenner to calm his nerves and give him that cuddle once the night was over.
