Besides the Drunk Driving Incident, Is Justin Timberlake’s DUI Arrest Footage the Best PR He’s Gotten in Years?
Justin Timberlake’s politeness, self-awareness, and lack of entitlement felt more genuine than anything he’d done in the past 10 years.
For 3 years, Timberlake’s public image had been in freefall. On October 24, 2023, Britney Spears released her memoir The Woman in Me, detailing their relationship in terms that contradicted the breakup narrative he’d controlled since “Cry Me a River” in 2002. The Super Bowl halftime incident with Janet Jackson in 2004 resurfaced and hit different the second time around. His tour performances got roasted. Everyone said JT was cooked.
Then on June 18, 2024, he got drunk at a charity golf event in Sag Harbor, New York, ran a stop sign, and got pulled over at 12:30 AM.
On the bodycam, he told the officers he was on a “world tour.” They looked at him like he was a crackhead. He just smiled and said, “It’s hard to explain… I’m Justin Timberlake.” When backup arrived, he greeted the second officer with a big smile: “How you doing, man?” During the field sobriety tests, he kept laughing: “These are, like, hard tests!” He pointed at his own tire marks on the road and asked, “Do you want this one or this one?” Then: “Whatever you want, man.”
When they told him he was under arrest, he said with deadpan delivery: “This is gonna ruin the tour.” In the booking room, he launched into a slurred, looping chant of his own initials. “JT… JT… JT…” When they wrote “white” under race on his booking sheet, he did a double take. “I’m just kidding, man.”
He was offered the chemical test 3 separate times and declined each one. “No, I’m not doing a chemical test. Like guys, I don’t mean no harm.” When they asked him to sign the refusal form, he just said no. No BAC number ever made it onto the record. The original DWI was dropped. He pleaded guilty to DWAI, a non-criminal traffic violation. A $500 fine, 25 hours of community service, and a 90-day license suspension. Zero jail time.
Driving drunk is serious, and a DUI in 2024 has already done real, permanent reputational damage. But after watching the footage, Justin Timberlake comes off more authentic and human than he has in a very long time.
