Ins first premiered the play back in 2011 at the Toronto Fringe Festival, originally playing the son Jung. Fifteen years later, he takes on the role he always envisioned for himself, sharing that playing Appa “just felt right” and like coming home to the material.

The production is currently playing at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles through April 19, and celebrated its opening night on Tuesday (March 24), where Sandra Oh and Nia Vardalos came out to support the premiere. Check out the pictures in the gallery!

Joining Ins on stage are Kelly Seo as Janet, Esther Chung as Umma, Ryan Jinn as Jung, and Brandon McKnight, who takes on multiple roles including Rich, Alex, Mr. Kee, and Mike.

The story follows Mr. Kim, known as Appa, who runs a convenience store with his wife Umma while navigating generational and cultural differences with their children. Packed with culture clash humor and deeply relatable family dynamics, the play remains both entertaining and meaningful, continuing to highlight the immigrant experience with warmth and honesty.

Tickets are on sale now for the Los Angeles run, with additional tour dates continuing across North America.
