Former CEO charged with embezzling $5.2M from a camp for sick kids co-founded by Paul Newman

The former CEO of a nonprofit camp for kids with serious medical conditions has been been charged with 15 felonies after prosecutors said he embezzled more than $5 million from the camp co-founded by Paul Newman. Christopher L. Butler, of Porter Ranch, California, is expected to be arraigned Thursday in Los Angeles. He could not be reached for comment. Rio de Janeiro zoo animals are treated to popsicles as the city faces scorching summer weather

Animals at Rio de Janeiro’s BioParque zoo received popsicles and frozen treats Tuesday as the city faced another day of extreme heat during Brazil’s summer. Jaguars, monkeys and other animals were given an iced diet prepared according to each species’ needs, zoo officials said. Some received frozen fruit, while others were offered mixtures containing frozen blood. New York AG settles with Jewish group she accused of intimidating pro-Palestinian activists

New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced a settlement with Batar US, a right-wing Jewish group that she accused of trying to intimidate pro-Palestinian activists. The group gained attention last year for claiming to compile names of campus protesters against the Gaza war and urging deportation. The agreement announced Tuesday requires Betar to cease threatening activists or face a $50,000 penalty. Betar's chairman denied that his group had done anything illegal, including intimidation. Georgia lawmakers move to strike Savannah ban on guns in unlocked cars

Georgia lawmakers are moving to void a Savannah ordinance that fines or jails people for leaving guns in unlocked cars. The state Senate approved the measure Monday, sending it to Gov. Brian Kemp for his signature or veto. The bill prevents cities from regulating gun storage. Gun owners could sue local governments for violating the law, collecting at least $25,000 in damages.
