Avengers 5 Faces Major Changes Amid Staff Departures
Avengers 5 remains one of the most anticipated Marvel movies, but with less than a year before shooting starts, the production team still has several key roles to fill, especially after the departure of screenwriter Michael Waldron.
Waldron, the creator of Loki and head writer for its first season, also penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He was originally set to write both Avengers 5 and Avengers 6. However, the project has seen significant changes, including the loss of director Destin Daniel Cretton, writer Jeff Loveness, and the titular antagonist Jonathan Majors, who was removed after being found guilty of reckless assault and harassment. Waldron is the latest to leave, although he remains attached to write Avengers 6: Secret Wars.

The film is scheduled to start shooting in late March 2025 and continue through August. The reasons for his departure are unclear, but it is suggested that he was close to finishing his draft or had already completed it.
There are rumors that Waldron's exit is tied to Marvel's plans to change the plot for Avengers 5 after dropping Majors, who was supposed to play Kang the Conqueror. Earlier this year, MCU hinted at a major shift by revising the film's official title from The Kang Dynasty back to Avengers 5. Following Majors' controversy, there was speculation about whether Marvel would recast the role or scrap the Kang-centric plot altogether. It now appears Marvel is opting to change the plot, potentially replacing Kang with another major villain, such as Doctor Doom.
