Sweden extradited to Kazakhstan a suspect in the embezzlement of millions of tenge

Tengrinews.kz - Sweden has extradited to Kazakhstan a suspect in the embezzlement of millions of tenge, according to the General Prosecutor's Office.
On November 9, with the assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Stockholm, the Prosecutor General's Office and Interpol of the Ministry of Internal Affairs extradited a Kazakhstani citizen from the Kingdom of Sweden to face criminal charges for embezzlement of other people's property on a large scale.

"According to the investigation, between 2015 and 2020, while working at a shopping center in Shymkent, the suspect embezzled about 57 million tenge. After committing the crime, he fled and was placed on the international wanted list. In February of this year, he was arrested in Sweden and, upon request from the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan, was extradited to the country. He is currently in the pre-trial detention center in Astana," reported the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

According to official data, the punishment for this crime is imprisonment for a term of 7 to 12 years, with confiscation of property and deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to 10 years, or without such a deprivation.

"It should be noted that, despite the absence of an extradition agreement with the Kingdom of Sweden, the extradition was made possible through effective cooperation between the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Justice of Sweden," stated the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Last year, Sweden also handed over two wanted individuals to Kazakhstan, who are currently serving their sentences.
