Fan Project Brings "Grand Theft Auto 3" to the Sega Dreamcast
Fans are working on a port of "Grand Theft Auto 3" for the Sega Dreamcast, making Rockstar's iconic open-world game playable on Sega's final console for the first time ever. "Grand Theft Auto 3" is easily one of the most important video games ever made. It catapulted the Grand Theft Auto series to new heights, established Rockstar Games as a household name, laid the groundwork for countless open-world games to follow, and is one of the best-selling and highest-rated video games in history. Despite its landmark status, fans have limited options for playing it.
Initially, "Grand Theft Auto 3" was a PlayStation 2 exclusive. It eventually made its way to PC, Xbox, and mobile devices. The game also released on PS4, though that version has since been replaced by the less popular Definitive Edition, which altered the graphics and introduced technical problems absent in the original. Now, it seems "Grand Theft Auto" fans may soon have the chance to experience the game on yet another platform.

The project is a massive undertaking, and as noted by Time Extension, the game is only playable on modded Dreamcast consoles with 32MB of RAM. What’s particularly interesting about this effort is that "Grand Theft Auto 3" development actually started on Sega's ill-fated console.
While development eventually shifted to the PS2, "Grand Theft Auto 3" initially began as a Sega Dreamcast project. Unfortunately, the Sega Dreamcast struggled to compete with the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox, leading to the decision to move development to the more successful PS2. But since "GTA 3" was once planned as a Dreamcast game, it's fitting that this fan project is finally bringing it to fruition.
