Direct Flights between Miami and Cienfuegos Will Be Resumed
AREQUIPA, Peru – The Cienfuegos Jaime González international airport is preparing its facilities to welcome direct flights from Miami, according to the official newspaper 5 de Septiembre.
The news came to light on the occasion of Cuban Aviation Day and involves the resumption of the Miami-Cienfuegos route, which was interrupted in 2017.
Laifrez Fernández Montes de Oca, director of the airport, explained that initially, flights will be on Mondays and Fridays at midday.
“This represents a very good opportunity for those living abroad and those here who are visiting,” the director added.
Furthermore, Montes de Oca noted that the Cienfuegos airport is in an “ideal location” to provide services to other central regions of the country.
According to the report, tickets can be purchased through Havanatur agencies in Cuba, as well as authorized agencies in Miami. However, it was not specified when the mentioned flights will resume.
The state media also highlighted the maintenance of the equipment, the runway, and the airport’s perimeter fencing among the actions for “continuous improvements in infrastructure” carried out over the last few months.
The announcement of the resumption of flights between the two cities comes at a time of difficulties for the Island’s tourism. The Cuban regime aims to welcome three million tourists in 2024, after having failed to meet the target in 2023, for the second consecutive year.
Last November, the regime’s official press attempted to clean up the image of the Island’s depressed tourism sector with a report that involved the company Oxford Economics, which forecasts future growth in tourist arrivals in destinations such as Cuba, Sweden, Tunisia, Jordan, and Thailand.
The improvement to which the state media is trying to cling would not arrive, if the forecast is met, until 2033, in other words, in a decade.
