Tokayev: CSTO is more than just a military partnership

Tengrinews.kz - Kassym-Jomart Tokayev participated in the restricted session of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
The session was attended by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov.
The President of Kazakhstan emphasized that the CSTO has become one of the key structures ensuring peace and stability across Eurasia.

"In the face of modern challenges, the CSTO consistently proves its relevance as a security guarantor for all member states. Our coordinated actions, mutual trust, and support strengthen our collective ability to address the most complex and large-scale tasks. It is important to stress that the CSTO is more than just a military partnership; it is a unique mechanism that unites our efforts and resources to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our states," Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

The president noted that during Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the CSTO, efforts were focused on strengthening close cooperation among member states and enhancing the efficiency of mechanisms for rapid response to crises.

Particular attention was paid to developing the organization's capabilities in combating modern threats, including terrorism, cyberattacks, transnational crime, and drug trafficking.

"In a planned manner, the CSTO conducted meetings of its statutory bodies, military exercises, and preventive operations. Relevant issues of collective security were thoroughly discussed by foreign ministers and defense ministers. Meetings were held at the level of national security council secretaries and parliamentary leaders. Sessions of auxiliary and working bodies of the organization were conducted, and a series of consultations on various aspects of CSTO activities took place," the Head of State said.

He added that during the intersessional period, a number of significant documents were adopted, covering issues of international defense cooperation and countering current challenges and threats to collective security. Special attention was given to preparations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

"Today, a corresponding statement by the Collective Security Council will be presented for our consideration. Overall, all tasks set during the Republic of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship have been fulfilled. Allow me to express my deep gratitude for the support in implementing our priorities and for the fruitful joint work," Tokayev concluded.

During the event, pressing issues of international and regional security were discussed. Additionally, the results of Kazakhstan's 2024 CSTO chairmanship were summarized, and plans for the upcoming period were outlined.
Earlier today, the leaders of five states participated in the CSTO Collective Security Council session held at the Palace of Independence in Astana.
