Scientists discovered how coffee and tea are linked to risk the of developing cancer

Tengrinews.kz - Scientists from six countries conducted a joint analysis of existing studies and concluded that the consumption of coffee and tea is associated with a reduced risk of developing head and neck cancer, according to N+1.

The analysis included 14 studies with a total of 9,548 patients with such a diagnosis and 15,783 people without it. The data were processed using logistic regression with random effects, adjusted for sociodemographic factors and lifestyle. The results were published in the journal Cancer.

It was found that consuming more than four cups of regular coffee per day is associated with a reduced overall risk of head and neck cancer: the odds ratio (OR) was 0.83, as well as for oral cancer (OR 0.70) and oropharyngeal cancer (OR 0.78). Drinking 3-4 cups of this beverage per day correlated with a reduced risk of hypopharyngeal cancer (OR 0.59).

Consuming up to one cup of regular coffee or any amount of decaffeinated coffee was associated with a reduced risk of oral cancer (OR 0.66 and 0.75, respectively).

Consuming up to one cup of tea per day correlated with a lower risk of head and neck cancer overall (OR 0.91) and hypopharyngeal cancer (OR 0.73), but with a higher risk of laryngeal cancer (OR 1.38).
