Служба в армии в советское время считалась важным и необходимым этапом жизни любого мужчины. С нее начиналось вступление во взрослую жизнь вчерашних мальчишек, сопровождавшееся традиционными проводами и двухлетним, а в некоторых родах войск и трехлетним несением воинской обязанности.
В армию старались попасть все мальчишки, это считалось престижной и почетной обязанностью. К тем, кто не служил в армии, относились с недоверием и осуждением, хотя нередко на это были объективные причины.
