Heeramandi on Netflix: Sanjay Leela Bhansali talks about the recurring presence of tawaifs in his work; says 'Fascinated by those faces'

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is currently basking in the sun of his recently released web series Heeramandi which is streaming on Netflix. Well, the famous filmmaker Bhansali keeps making films and series about courtesans, and sex workers. He made Saawariya, Devdas, Gangubai Kathiawadi and more such films which depict the presence of sex workers.

In a new interview with Galatta Plus, the director opened up about his fascination with this specific figure in his works. During the conversation, Sanjay said that he feels that these women have a lot of enigma, a lot of mystery. He further added that the courtesan, the tawaif, or the prostitute are different and exude a certain kind of power which seems interesting. He said how he finds it fascinating as they sing and dance. He even said that they understand the art of living, and the importance of architecture and call them connoisseurs of art.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali added saying, that they are just artists and that he needs them. He remembered an old memory of him going to school and said that he was fascinated by those faces. He even said that he was influenced by Madhubala in Mughal-E-Azam and Nargis Dutt in Adaalat.
