Luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is taking a strategic step towards electrification by partnering with Chinese automaker Chery. This collaboration will see JLR utilize Chery’s Exeed brand’s modular platforms for its future plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).

M3X and E0X: The Platforms Propelling JLR’s Electrification

Chery Chairman Yin Tongyao confirmed JLR’s adoption of Exeed’s M3X and E0X platforms. The M3X platform caters specifically to combustion engine and PHEV models, featuring a unique “Super Hybrid” system. This system combines a gasoline engine with two electric motors for a claimed range exceeding 1,000 kilometers and impressive thermal efficiency.

The E0X platform, co-developed by Chery and Huawei, offers more versatility. It caters to A-segment to C-segment vehicles with various body styles and supports both pure EVs and Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs). Additionally, the E0X platform boasts 800V and 400V system architectures, advanced autonomous driving capabilities, and an energy consumption target of 12 kWh/100 km.

Strategic Shift

This platform-sharing agreement signifies JLR’s commitment to electrification. However, it’s important to note that the focus might lean towards PHEVs in the near future. In February, JLR announced a shift in strategy, prioritizing PHEVs over pure EVs. This revision comes after the initial goal of launching six electric Land Rover models by 2026 was scaled back. Currently, JLR plans to introduce four EVs alongside the aforementioned PHEVs.

A New Chapter

The partnership with Chery presents JLR with a significant opportunity to accelerate its electric vehicle development. While the PHEV focus might differ from initial plans, it positions JLR to cater to a broader market segment while still offering electric options. This collaboration paves the way for an exciting new chapter in JLR’s electrification journey.
