Jeep Targets India’s Budget SUV Market with New Citroen-Based Model

Jeep is planning a new, budget-friendly SUV specifically for the Indian market. While details are still emerging, rumors suggest it could be a new iteration of the popular Renegade model.

This new offering marks a strategic shift for Jeep. Initially, the next-generation Compass was on the cards, but its premium STLA platform would have driven up the price. Instead, Jeep is looking at the more affordable Citroen Modular Platform (CMP), the same platform that underpins the Citroen C3 hatchback already available in India.

CMP Platform: The Key to Affordability

This switch to the CMP platform offers several advantages. Firstly, it allows Jeep to launch the Renegade at a competitive price point, potentially starting around Rs 15 lakh. Secondly, sharing the platform with Citroen leads to economies of scale, bringing down costs for crucial components like the engine and electronics.

Speaking of the engine, the Renegade is expected to ditch the smaller Citroen engine and adopt a more powerful option. This could be a 1.6-liter turbo-petrol engine co-developed by BMW and PSA, offering 150hp or even 180hp in the top-spec variant.

EV Market

Jeep is also catering to the growing electric vehicle market in India. The company has confirmed a battery-electric version of the Renegade with a price tag under USD 25,000, making it a compelling option for eco-conscious buyers.

Tech Upgrade: ADAS Features on the Horizon

The decision to leverage the CMP platform also opens doors for the inclusion of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in the new Renegade. These features, like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, are becoming increasingly popular in India.

While Jeep hasn’t officially confirmed the Renegade nameplate for the Indian market, its global popularity makes it a strong contender. This new, budget-friendly Renegade, with a possible electric option and a powerful engine, could be a game-changer for Jeep in India, filling the gap left by the shelved Compass launch and offering a compelling option for SUV enthusiasts.
