Mahindra Marazzo Likely Discontinued: A Unique MPV Bites the Dust

Mahindra’s website appears to have quietly removed the Marazzo, a distinctive MPV, from its product lineup. This move strongly suggests the end of the road for this vehicle, despite earlier hopes of a revival.

A Pioneering Collaboration

The Marazzo was a product of a unique collaboration between Pininfarina, the esteemed Italian design house, and Mahindra. Inspired by a shark’s form, the Marazzo stood out with a blend of a ladder-frame chassis, a transverse-mounted engine, and a front-wheel-drive layout. It boasted features like sophisticated suspension components, versatile second-row seating options, and dedicated rear AC vents.

Struggles in a Shifting Market

However, the Marazzo’s unconventional design and features failed to resonate with a large segment of the Indian car market. The preference for SUVs overshadowed the MPV silhouette, leading to consistently low sales figures. In the past year, Mahindra only managed double-digit sales figures, with the sole exception of September 2023 (144 units). The lack of significant updates throughout its lifecycle likely contributed to its dwindling popularity.

A Competitive Landscape

The Marazzo’s direct competitors included established MPVs like the Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Innova Crysta, and Kia Carens. At the time of its discontinuation, the Marazzo’s price ranged from Rs 14.59 lakh to Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

While Mahindra hasn’t made an official announcement, the Marazzo’s absence from their website suggests its discontinuation. This marks the end of an interesting experiment in MPV design, but also highlights the challenges of carving a niche in a market with strong preferences.
