BYD India is preparing to launch a new, budget-friendly variant of their popular electric SUV, the Atto 3, on July 10th. This new variant prioritizes affordability over the upgrades expected in the 2024 update.

Key Highlights

  • Smaller Battery for Lower Price: The new variant will likely feature a smaller 50kWh battery pack, offering a range of around 300-400 km on a single charge. This translates to a significant price reduction compared to the current model’s 60.48kWh battery and 521 km range.
  • Targeting Competitive Market: BYD aims to compete with the top-end models of the MG ZS EV, which offers a similar range with its 50.3kWh battery. The new Atto 3 variant is expected to be priced around Rs 26 lakh-28 lakh, compared to the current Atto 3’s Rs 33.99 lakh price tag.
  • Focus on Affordability: To achieve this lower price point, BYD will likely forgo the interior updates expected in the 2024 model, such as the larger 15.6-inch rotating display and new color schemes.

A Bigger Move for BYD

Apart from the new variant, BYD has received ARAI homologation certification in India. This removes the 2500-unit limit imposed on imported (CBU and SKD) vehicles. This certification could pave the way for BYD to switch production from a Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) model to a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) model, further reducing costs in the future.
