Electric G-Wagon is Here! Mercedes Opens Bookings for G 580 with EQ Technology

Mercedes-Benz India has begun accepting bookings for the highly anticipated G 580 with EQ Technology, the electric version of the iconic G-Class SUV. This news follows the global reveal of the car in April 2024.

Previously showcased as the EQG concept at the Bharat Mobility Expo, the G 580 arrives with a revised name for the global market. While maintaining the G-Class’s signature muscular design, the electric variant sports a modern update. The most noticeable change is the closed-off grille, replacing the traditional one and aligning with the design language of other Mercedes-Benz EVs.

Preserving Heritage with a Modern Twist

The G 580 with EQ Technology retains the G-Class’s signature boxy design and muscular aesthetics. However, some key changes differentiate it from its gasoline counterpart. The most prominent update is the replacement of the traditional grille with a closed-off panel, aligning with the design language of other Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles. Customers can choose between a standard blanked-out grille with an illuminated surround or a fully enclosed option with black headlamp housings.

The electric G-Class also features redesigned bumpers, a sealed and illuminated front grille, and a dedicated compartment for the charging cable that replaces the spare tire on the rear door. The AMG variant gets a set of 20-inch wheels for a more aggressive look.

Powerful Performance and Off-Road Capability

The G 580 packs a punch with a quad-motor all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain. Each wheel boasts its own electric motor, generating a combined output of 579 horsepower and a staggering 1,164 Nm of torque. This translates to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.7 seconds, all while maintaining the G-Class’s renowned off-road capabilities.

Impressive Range and Charging Options

The electric G-Class is equipped with a 116 kWh under-floor battery pack, providing a driving range of up to 473 km on a single charge according to Mercedes-Benz. The G 580 supports DC fast charging up to 200 kW, enabling it to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 32 minutes. Additionally, it supports AC charging up to 11 kW for added convenience.

Familiar and Tech-Packed Interior

The G 580’s cabin retains the familiar layout, offering a comfortable and functional space. Key features include a multifunctional steering wheel with touch controls, a dual 12.3-inch display system (one for infotainment and one for the instrument cluster), a voice assistant, and an optional augmented reality-based heads-up display. An additional feature pack provides rear passengers with two 11.6-inch touchscreens and a Burmester 3D sound system for an even more luxurious experience.

Safety

The G 580 with EQ Technology prioritizes safety with a comprehensive suite of features. This includes a 360-degree camera, traffic sign assist, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking, airbags, and a driver attentiveness alert.

Expected Price and Competition

The all-electric G-Class is expected to carry a price tag of around Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom) upon its launch in the Indian market. This positions it as a competitor to the Land Rover Defender in the premium electric SUV segment.
