Maruti Suzuki has shed light on Suzuki Motor Japan’s 10-year technology roadmap, which includes a significant weight reduction for the popular Alto hatchback. The next-generation Alto is set to be a trimmer machine, shedding a targeted 100 kg (around 15%) from its current weight of 680 kg.

This strategic move prioritizes energy efficiency across Suzuki’s entire vehicle lineup. The company’s statement highlights a focus on improving battery recyclability and achieving carbon neutrality. Notably, the Alto has seen weight fluctuations throughout its nine generations in the Japanese market (in production since 1979). The 10th generation aims to recapture the lightweight spirit of the early models, bringing its weight closer to the original Suzulight and even lighter than the iconic SS80 Maruti 800.

The benefits of a lighter car extend beyond fuel efficiency. Suzuki estimates that a 200 kg weight reduction translates to a 20% reduction in production energy and a 6% improvement in driving efficiency.

Beyond Weight: A Multi-Pronged Approach to Sustainability

While weight reduction takes center stage, Suzuki’s strategy encompasses a broader vision for sustainable mobility. The company plans to introduce the high-efficiency Z12E engine globally and explore carbon-neutral fuels and next-generation hybrids to further minimize energy consumption. Additionally, Suzuki is developing software-defined vehicles (SDVs) that leverage shared hardware and reusable software to optimize development costs.

Looking ahead, Suzuki recognizes the importance of traffic congestion, particularly in key markets like India. Their focus extends to software and driver-assistance systems (ADAS) designed to improve traffic flow. Finally, Suzuki emphasizes designing future products with disassembly and recyclability in mind, ensuring a more sustainable future for their vehicles.
