Maruti Grand Vitara: Reaches 2 Lakh Sales in 22 Months, Becomes Fastest-Selling Midsize SUV in India

Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara has cemented its place as a midsize SUV champion, achieving a remarkable sales milestone in just 22 months. Launched in September 2022, the Grand Vitara crossed the coveted 2 lakh unit mark by early July 2024, surpassing the Hyundai Creta’s previous record of 25 months.

Hybrid Power and Feature-Packed Appeal Drive Sales

The Grand Vitara’s success can be attributed to its diverse powertrain options, including a 1.5-litre mild hybrid and a segment-leading 1.5-litre strong hybrid variant. The strong hybrid offers an impressive 114.4 bhp and three driving modes (EV, hybrid, and petrol) for optimal efficiency and performance. Additionally, a CNG option further broadens the appeal to budget-conscious buyers.

Beyond powertrains, the Grand Vitara boasts a comprehensive feature list, featuring:

  • Wireless charging
  • Head-up Display
  • 360-degree camera
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Nine-inch touchscreen SmartPlay Pro+ display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Ventilated and heated seats

This combination of powertrain choices, fuel efficiency, and feature richness has propelled the Grand Vitara to the top of the midsize SUV segment.

CNG Focus Strengthens Market Leadership

Maruti Suzuki, India’s undisputed CNG leader, further solidified its position with the introduction of the Grand Vitara CNG in January 2023. This strategic move expanded their CNG portfolio to 14 models and contributed significantly to their sales growth. In the first half of 2024, Maruti Suzuki recorded a 34% increase in CNG vehicle sales, solidifying their dominance in this segment.

Grand Vitara Propels Nexa Sales

The Grand Vitara has emerged as a key player within Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa channel, contributing significantly to its recent 25 lakh unit milestone. By June 2024, Nexa had sold 27,11,895 cars and SUVs, with the Grand Vitara contributing a noteworthy 1,99,550 units (7.35%). This impressive performance places it third behind the well-established Baleno and Ignis models.

Looking at the period since its launch in FY2023, the Grand Vitara’s impact on Nexa is even more remarkable. It captures a strong 19% share of the 10,56,038 Nexa cars and SUVs sold until June 2024. This highlights the Grand Vitara’s rapid rise as a major sales driver for Nexa.

In January 2023 only, the first batch of Made-in-India Grand Vitara was exported to Latin America from the Kamarajar Port, making it the brand’s 17th export model. The Maruti Suzuki models with the highest export demand are the Dzire sedan, Swift, S Presso, Baleno hatchbacks, and the Brezza SUV.
