Hyundai has expanded the Grand i10 Nios lineup with the introduction of a CNG variant, equipped with the brand’s new HY-CNG dual-cylinder technology. Priced from Rs 7.75 lakh, the Nios CNG competes directly with the Tata Tiago iCNG.

Hyundai’s new CNG setup replaces the traditional single cylinder with two smaller tanks, optimizing boot space. The 1.2-liter petrol engine produces 69hp and 95Nm on CNG, and 83hp and 114Nm on petrol. The Nios CNG is exclusively available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Hyundai claims a fuel efficiency of 27 km/kg for the Nios CNG.

The Tata Tiago iCNG, also featuring a twin-cylinder setup, is priced between Rs 6.50 lakh and Rs 7.50 lakh for the manual variants and between Rs 7.50 lakh and Rs 8.50 lakh for the AMT variants. It delivers 73hp and 95Nm on CNG and boasts a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.49 km/kg.

Both models have undergone safety assessments by Global NCAP, with the Tiago securing a 4-star rating and the Nios receiving a 2-star rating.

While the Nios CNG offers a larger boot (260 liters) and better fuel efficiency, the Tiago iCNG counters with a lower starting price, an automatic transmission option, and a superior safety rating. Additionally, the Tiago’s ground clearance of 170mm is higher than the Nios’.

The choice between the two ultimately depends on individual priorities, with both models offering compelling propositions in the CNG hatchback segment.
