Citroen India has officially unveiled the production version of its highly anticipated Basalt coupe SUV. First showcased as a concept in March, the production model retains the bold design elements that made waves. The Basalt is set to join the fiercely competitive compact SUV segment, where it will directly rival the upcoming Tata Curvv, scheduled for launch on August 7th.

Design and Exterior

The Basalt’s exterior shares a strong family resemblance with the C3 Aircross, particularly at the front. It retains the signature split grille, faux skid plate, and chrome Chevron emblem, though it upgrades to projector LED headlamps. However, the coupe SUV’s unique character is evident in its side profile, featuring bold, squared-off wheel arches and a smoothly flowing roofline that culminates in a sizable tailgate. The rear design is equally distinctive, with a chunky, dual-tone bumper and 3D-effect taillights. While the Basalt adopts new alloy wheel designs, it carries over the C3 Aircross’ pull-type door handles.

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the Basalt is a 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine producing 108.4bhp, mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Alternatively, a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine generating 81bhp is available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Fuel efficiency figures for the turbo-petrol variant stand at 19.5km/l with the manual and 18.7km/l with the automatic, while the naturally aspirated engine delivers 18km/l.

Features and Interior

The Basalt’s interior shares similarities with the C3 Aircross, offering a spacious five-seater cabin with a modern, dual-tone design. The front dashboard retains the familiar layout and 10.25-inch touchscreen, while the driver benefits from a new 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Citroen’s signature C-Cubed design elements are evident throughout.

Key upgrades include a new HVAC panel with digital controls and auto climate control, a larger front armrest, and improved rear seat comfort with adjustable under-thigh support – a segment-first feature. The rear bench accommodates three passengers with a foldable armrest and cup holders.

Technology highlights include a wireless charger, wireless smartphone connectivity, and connected car features. While offering a generous 470 liters of boot space, the Basalt misses out on a panoramic sunroof, unlike its upcoming rival, the Tata Curvv.

Competition

The Basalt will be available in five single-tone colors: Polar White, Steel Grey, Platinum Grey, Garnet Red, and Cosmo Blue. For those seeking a bolder look, Citroen also offers Polar White and Garnet Red with a contrasting black roof.

It enters a highly competitive segment, with the soon-to-be-launched Tata Curvv as its primary rival. Other key competitors include established models like the Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Hyundai Creta.
