As Ranbir Kapoor works on Ramayana, Ram Gopal Varma says it's dangerous to make films on mythology, 'You can’t try this in our country'

Ram Gopal Varma has shared his thoughts on mythological movies being made in India, as reports of Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana shoot being resumed made headlines.

Ram Gopal Varma is known to speak his mind. The director often shares his views on other people's movies and whatever is going on in the film industry. Recently, Varma slammed Indian filmmakers for thinking that audiences are dumb. He called them out for their quality of stories and compared them with several Hollywood filmmakers and how their stories are meaningful. Now, ahead of Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana shooting, the Satya director shared his thoughts on mythological movies being made in India.

As reported by the Indian Express, Ram Gopal Varma was asked about the Ramayana trilogy, which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. RVG shared that it is dangerous to make movies based on mythological stories. The filmmaker reasoned that these stories are known to people, and if someone tries to make them different, it can have a reserve effect. Varma stated that one can't try this in India as people worship these mythological figures.

Ram Gopal Varma further stated that it might have been more feasible in the past when filmmakers like Babubhai Mistry created works such as Sampurana Ramayana and NT Rama Rao's mythological films. He observed that today these films have attained a status of reverence. Ram also stressed how there was less polarisation and that the absence of social media meant that people's interpretations were not constantly challenged.

The Satya director stated that Om Raut's Adipurush was more about Saif Ali Khan's and Hanuman's looks. Due to this, the film received too much criticism. He believes taking such topics is quite dangerous. However, he shared his best wishes with the filmmakers who are putting effort into making mythological dramas.

RVG himself was recently a part of a film that was inspired by the mythological story of the Kalki saga. The director had a special appearance in Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD. The science fiction mythological saga is based on the birth of Kalki-Kali, set in the future. It stars Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan in the leading roles.

Talking about Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana, it is being helmed by Nitesh Tiwari. Recently, there were reports that actor Kunal Kapoor is part of the mythological saga. The film will reportedly star Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and KGF star Yash as Ravana.
