YEREVAN, September 16, /ARKA/. The Yerevan City Hall once again admitted the imperfection of the city’s drainage system, saying it requires major reconstruction.br/pp

Heavy rains on September 13 flooded many parts of the city, this time underground passages, transport hubs and tunnels, the streets... This phenomenon once again showed that the (water drainage) system is imperfect; it is built with omissions and is in need of serious reconstruction, said Mayoral Advisor Kamo Areyan at a working meeting on Monday./pp

According to him, the entire territory of the city has been inventoried, and parts with no storm drain system are known. It is obvious that in many parts the capacity is now insufficient, stated Areyan./pp

He pointed out that the resources of the Rescue Service, Patrol Service, and local government employees involved in the work on September 13 were insufficient. In addition, due to the flow of water mixed with household waste, there was a failure in the operation of the pumping systems installed in underground passages, for example on Vardanants Street./pp

All the consequences of the flooding on September 13 have already been eliminated. As of Sunday afternoon, all crossings have been cleared, and all pumps will be cleared from the utility service side today, said Areyan./pp

Mayor Tigran Avinyan acknowledged the problems with Yerevan's drainage system, saying that it was beyond the city administration's control. The system itself is quite old and worn out, and significant investments are needed, said Avinyan, adding that the issue would be discussed by the Government./pp

The downpour that hit Yerevan and its suburbs on the evening of September 13 caused damage to infrastructure and transport. The National Crisis Management Center received 65 signals about emergencies due to heavy rain, including short circuits in wires, clogged storm drains and manholes, and flooding. -0-/p
