SWITCH Mobility Unveils EiV12 and E1 Electric Buses

SWITCH Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has taken a bold step toward redefining urban transportation. The company introduced two new electric buses, the SWITCH EiV12 for India and the SWITCH E1 for the European market, during a high-profile launch event attended by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways of India.

SWITCH EiV12: Made in India, for India

The EiV12 is a low-floor electric city bus designed specifically for Indian roads. It is the first of its kind in India to feature chassis-mounted batteries with a scalable capacity exceeding 400 kWh. This design optimizes energy efficiency and enhances operational flexibility.

With seating for up to 39 passengers and thoughtful features like an automated wheelchair ramp and kneeling mechanism, the EiV12 prioritizes accessibility. Five CCTV cameras with no blind spots and dedicated seats for women further emphasize passenger safety.

Other standout features include:

  • SWITCH iON Telematics: Real-time health monitoring and efficient fleet management.
  • Panoramic Glass Areas: Enhancing visibility and interior lighting.
  • Advanced Charging Technology: Rear-end dual-gun charging ensures quick turnaround times, ideal for busy urban depots.

The EiV12 has already secured 1,800 orders, reflecting strong market confidence in its capabilities.

SWITCH E1: European Innovation

Engineered for European cities, the SWITCH E1 boasts a lightweight monocoque construction for optimal efficiency. It features:

  • In-Wheel Motors: For a quieter, more efficient ride.
  • Flat Gangway Design: Ensuring seamless passenger movement.
  • Triple-Door Configuration: Reducing boarding and alighting times.

With a capacity for 93 passengers, including standees, the E1 aligns with the needs of dense urban transit systems in Europe.

A Growing Market for Electric Buses

The electric bus market in India is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% by 2030. By then, over 70,000 electric city buses are expected to be in operation, with an EV penetration rate reaching 70%. SWITCH Mobility aims to capitalize on this momentum with its new offerings.

A Commitment to Sustainability

During the event, Ashok P. Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group (India), highlighted the buses as a realization of the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative. The company’s long-term vision is to democratize electric mobility while advancing its global presence. Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of SWITCH Mobility, emphasized the company’s goal of making sustainable transit accessible worldwide.

What This Means for the Future

The EiV12 and E1 demonstrate SWITCH Mobility’s ability to blend innovative engineering with passenger-focused design. From energy-efficient operations to enhanced accessibility, these buses address the pressing needs of urban transit in an environmentally conscious manner.

By embracing electric technology, SWITCH Mobility is not only contributing to sustainable transportation but also positioning itself as a leader in the global EV bus market.
