Polish Welterweight Denys Madry Badly Injured
By Per-Åke Persson
Polish welter Denys Madry (11-12-1) gave as usual his all Saturday (Jan 17) against Igor Pryga (10-1) but is wasn’t enough and he was knocked out in the sixth of a scheduled eight rounder that headlined a MXL Maxliga / Knockout Promotion in Dzierzoniow (Poland).
In the sixth Madry was knocked down but got up and was allowed to continue but Pryga followed up and Madry went down again and the fight was stopped – but it was obvious that something was seriously wrong with Madry and he was out of this world. He was tended to by his cornermen and the ringside physician and left the ring on a stretcher. He was taken by helicopter to the hospital in Walbrzych where the doctors quickly determined that he had suffered a cerebral hemhorrage. His fiancee Monika Wojcik was told that Denys´s condition was serious and even life threatening.
Surgery followed and all is reported to have gone well but Madry is still in an induced coma and will remain so until the swelling in his brain has gone down. Long term effects are at this stage not known.
