'Women more likely to splash the cash'

London - Feeling guilty about buying that designer handbag and new pair of shoes? You’re not alone.

A survey has found that women are more likely than men to splash out on goods they can’t afford. One in five confessed to living beyond their means, compared to just one in seven men.

But, while women were more likely to buy something unaffordable, they also worried more about making ends meet.

However the survey of 2 000 adults for Halifax found women were slightly more likely to save money for a rainy day, pay bills on time and be concerned about their family’s ability to pay debts.

Half of women worried about saving, compared with a third of men. A quarter of those surveyed believed they are better off than last year – up from a fifth in 2014.

Nick Young, of Halifax, said: “While it’s reassuring that some consumers are starting to feel relief when it comes to the financial pressures they have faced over the past few years, one in four still believe they are worse off than they were in 2014.”

Those in their teens and 20s were most likely to live beyond their means.
