Durban – Police have arrested two people in connection with the fatal stabbing at East Coast Radio’s Durban Day event.

Police spokesman Colonel Naicker said on Monday the two were arrested with the help of community members and would face charges of murder and attempted murder.

But Montreal King’s stabbing was not the only incident that one of the two men were alleged to have been involved in.

Naicker said that during the evening an altercation broke out between two groups of youths from Wentworth and Newlands East at People’s Park, near Moses Mabhida Stadium, where the event was being held.

“These groups were allegedly insulting each other when one of the men stabbed the victim in the chest. After stabbing the victim, the suspect dropped the knife and fled whilst his friend, kicked the victim,” said Zwane.

The confrontation between the two groups continued and a friend of King was stabbed in the hand by the man who had kicked King.

Naicker said a third person was also stabbed in the altercation, but the circumstances around that stabbing were not clear and still being investigated.

Naicker said the third person was currently in hospital.

He said that it could not at this stage be said whether the two arrested for King’s murder were involved in the stabbing of the third victim.

King was stabbed shortly after the event at 7.20 pm. A passerby tried in vain to resuscitate the man but his attempts failed.

Eyewitnesses said they heard people screaming for help and when they approached they found the man lying on the floor.

King’s parents arrived shortly afterwards.

Earlier, East Coast Radio station manager Boni Mchunu said: “We are gutted and devastated at what happened last (Sunday) night.”

Speaking on the station, Mchunu said as organisers, they had received permission from city authorities to sell 18 000 tickets for the event, but had instead opted only to sell 16 500.

Asked about allegations that security was not up to scratch, Mchunu said that the station was “obsessed about security”.

The two men are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s court soon.
