Johannesburg - A gunman shot six people and two others were injured in a manic stampede after an argument over small change at the MTN Taxi Rank in the Joburg CBD on Tuesday night.

A vendor operating at the taxi rank said he saw the drama unfold.

“Two young guys were using the public toilets where you have to pay R4 to use them. Then one of them started arguing with the man at the door about change. He them took out a gun and shot the man and ran out of the toilet,” he said.

As the man ran out of the toilet, a police reservist, alerted by the shots gave chase.

The police confirmed that the reservist chased the shooter who then shot the reservist in the leg.

A King Pie employee, Florence, said this happened just before they were about to close the shop.

“We heard gun shots and saw a man run into the shop. He was shot in the leg.”

When The Star was speaking to Florence, other shopkeepers were washing away the blood on the floor and she pointed to a small chunk of flesh.

“We didn’t see the shooter. We just ran to the backroom because there were more shots,” she said.

Police provincial spokeswoman Captain Doniah Mathutsane said: “After shooting the reservist, the suspect then began to shoot randomly and four people were injured. Two more people were then injured after a stampede started from people trying to run away.”

The suspect is still at large.
